The summary of my major in-game choices is as follows:
Mage --> Joined the smuggling ring to pay for entry into Kirkwall --> Took Carver into the Deep Roads (where he was conscripted into the Grey Wardens) --> Fought the Arishok in single combat forKirkwall Isabela's honor freedom --> Romanced the pants off of the broody elf Fenris --> Let Anders live --> Sided with the Mages --> Contacted by Stroud --> Survived the Fade
PERSONALITY:
In Dragone Age II, Hawke's personality is determined through dialogue options chosen by the player as the game progresses. Hawke comes in three different flavors: Diplomatic/Helpful ("Blue" Hawke), Sarcastic/Charming ("Purple" Hawke), or Aggressive/Direct ("Red" Hawke).
I play Hawke as a gentle balance of blue and purple who can generally be counted on to take off the happy joker mask for his good friends in favor of sincerity. He can (and has) come off as a completely insensitive jackass, but overall he's really a decent, caring guy who hides his feelings behind a heavy facade of sarcasm and humor. He has decent context sensitivity, and while he will often choose to ignore it in favor of a sarcastic remark or inappropriate innuendo, there are instances where his irritation with a situation will cause him to be uncharacteristically direct (generally whenever he talks to Sebastian). Conversely, there are some situations (any time a parent or a child asks for help) where he drops the jackass act and responds with genuine sensitivity.
COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING:
Unseelie: Hawke's not a huge fan of RULES and REGULATIONS in the grand scheme of things. He's got the loyalty and fighting for a cause thing down but only on his terms, not someone else's. He's happy to cooperate for the Greater Good as long as there's some logic in what's asked of him...and of course he reserves the right to change his mind mid-mission. Capture a dangerous criminal for a rich politician promising a handsome reward? Sure. Dangerous criminal turns out to be a kidnapper, rapist, and murderer of children? Fuck that reward, man, this asshole's going to meet the Maker.
As an apostate, Hawke was born and raised well outside the usual Thedasian status quo. Although his mother did her best to raise her children to be proper Andrasteans, her only real success was Bethany. Neither of her sons really took to the Word of the Maker, although the more practical strictures - be kind unto others, harm not lest ye be harmed - did have an impact, as can be seen by Hawke's actions. The Maker provides a handy way to blaspheme, but that's basically all he's good for so far as Hawke is concerned. He has little belief in an invisible higher power because the visible ones are so unfortunately good at getting his attention, namely the Chantry, Circles of Magi, and the Templars. Hawke's well used to looking out for his own interests and for the interests of those he cares about. He doesn't expect or even particularly desire any help from an outside source such as the Chantry. The institution as a whole desperately needs a change. It pays lip service to the non-present Maker and only sometimes helps the needy and destitute as it preaches good.
Hawke has no interest in participating in a selective institution: even if he weren't a mage himself, and therefore not eligible for the Chantry's blessing, his father and sister would still be excluded.
That said, he won't be too thrilled with all of the rules and mores of the Unseelie court, even though he can get behind their ideas of Change Is Good and Honor Is A Lie. However, they will grant him lots of freedoms, which is definitely something he can agree with.
ABILITIES:
Hawke is a mage! He can set shit on fire with his mind and crush his enemies with...crushing force! I have a list of the spells he can cast and what they do here. He gets into a lot of fights in-game and is quite the magical powerhouse. In addition to flinging offensive spells at the bad guys, he wields a staff, which is enchanted to enhance his magical abilities and also doubles as an excellent club in the instance an enemy gets too close.
In canon, he uses his magic passively unless provoked and this follows in how I play him in RP settings. He might use magic to light a campfire or to heal an injury, but he doesn't set people's hair on fire for fun (for example). He grew up keeping his abilities a secret, and while his few close friends know he's a mage, it's not something he advertises.
He comes into Eachdraidh only able to use his Elemental skill tree, outlined below:

He comes into Eachdraidh only able to use his Elemental skill tree, outlined below:
Searing Fireball
The mage unleashes a bolt of flame that explodes, scattering and scorching foes. With the upgrade, Fireball scorches a larger area and is more likely to send enemies flying.
Pyromancer
Long practice with wielding flame increases all fire damage that the mage inflicts, including basic attacks from a fire staff.
Winter's Blast
The mage summons a blast of cold that injures and slows a single enemy. With the upgrade, Winter's Grasp is likely to freeze opponents, and may leave some in a BRITTLE state that warriors and rogues can exploit.
Cone of Cold (+ Deep Freeze)
A cone of deadly ice shoots forth from the mage's hands to injure and slow opponents. With the upgrade, the Cone of Cold freezes some enemies solid, and may even leave them BRITTLE, vulnerable to further attacks.
Apocalyptic Firestorm
The mage calls forth a devastating shower of flame that blasts down on the target area. With the upgrade Firestorm burns with greater intensity and scorches a larger area.
Elemental Mastery
The mage learns to command nature's two brutal extremes, mastering the dreadful effects of both fire and ice.
