[She laughs, but it's a useful sort of trick. Sure, the mabari was a formidable foe strength-wise, but a ruined surprise and head-start can sometimes make all the difference.

[If Hawke didn't know better, she'd say the breed had to be Orlesian, who else would want to breed dogs so small? But then there's the whole matter of Orlais being gone, and the fact that Orlesians wouldn't want to breed dogs to begin with. (Even if they did seem happy enough to poorly keep hunting dogs.)
In any case, it doesn't much matter. A dog is a dog. Even small ones. Marian would have been lucky to find one that liked her half as well as Champion had--DOES. And Rose fits the bill well enough. The puppy tries to jump up from her place on Hawke's lap to lick her face, and Marian just settles for giving up her hand to the dog's tongue instead.]
No, even as a puppy, Champion was bigger than this. But they could use a little fattening up, I think. [Like some people they know.]
At least it shouldn't be too difficult to put some meat on their bones. [UNLIKE CERTAIN PEOPLE THEY KNOW] This one seems happy enough to inhale whatever food is put in front of her, anyway.
[Hawke laughs, and picks Rose up to nuzzle at her face.] That's not just me, then? It's good to know they're not small because they're not eating. Because Rose here eats more than a dog her size really should. Yes you do.
[Hawke isn't exactly sure she'd ever expected to hear that tone of voice coming from Garrett, but given that they share almost everything, with the exception of brain activity, perhaps, it shouldn't surprise her.

He'll come around eventually. Who could really resist this face? [She squishes Rose's face to "prove" her point.] Cats don't put up with near as much. Who needs a mean old cat anyway?
...Well, that, or she's already learning that she wants what she can't have. They grow up so fast.
Anders, that's who. [He picks up Pearl and cradles her in his hands, rocking her onto her back. She stares up at him trustingly, her tiny wiggly body still for the moment.]
I hope they do. I'm half afraid I'll step on her and break her.
