[Good thing he's not waiting, then, because Hawke is slow!]
[Because he's busy checking out Anders, awwww yeah.]
[But once Anders dives in, Hawke will remove the rest of his own clothes (left in a careless pile on top of Anders' on the ground) and jump in after him.]
[Unlike Anders, Hawke's still hanging out in the waist-deep water nearer the shore, because there is a small yipping fuzzball running back and forth at the water's edge who wants very badly to join them but at the same time obviously has no idea what to do.]
[but if Hawke is going to play with the puppy, he's going to start swimming again. Swimming across and back is one way to work out some frustration, although he's avoiding the giant fish.
[Pearl wants so much to go to Hawke but at the same time she's so unsure it's endearing. Bit by bit she's getting her feet wet, and then the long fluffy hair on her belly and chest, but so far that's as far as she'll come in.]
[Hawke's attention is divided between his puppy and his lover; he really wants to watch his puppy because she's trying so hard and she's adorable, but he also really wants to watch Anders because he's wet and naked and swimming.]
[You know what motivates Pearl even more than the promise of praise from Hawke or the promise of food?]
[Anders.]
[With a tiny decisive yip, she makes up her mind and leaps!
...and plops into the water unmajestically, her long hair poofing up around her for a few moments before the water starts to soak in. Her tiny legs are churning under the water and there is a steely glint of determination in her black button eyes as she paddles madly the four or so feet from the shore to where the two men are standing in the waist-deep water.]
Good girl, Pearl! That's a good dog! What a good dog!
[Hawke takes pity on her and steps forward to pick her up. He knows his dog, though, and he realizes what it was that finally motivated her to jump into the water. So he turns and holds her out to Anders. She looks even smaller than usual held in his hands, her considerable fluff plastered to her skinny little puppy body by the water. She pants and whines at Anders but otherwise holds very still, as she's learned this seems to be the best method to encourage head pets from him.]
[Don't think he didn't notice that "we", Anders. <3]
She's grown a little since we got her.
[Pearl goes totally still when Anders starts scratching behind her ear; maybe if she's really, really good, he'll forget what he's doing and just keep doing it!
...Hey, she can hope!]
We're feeding her plenty. She's not skinny, just...small.

The water is incredibly warm. [and salty. which he noticed last time, too, but.]
no subject
[Bleh, he'd forgotten about that.]
[Unlike Anders, Hawke's still hanging out in the waist-deep water nearer the shore, because there is a small yipping fuzzball running back and forth at the water's edge who wants very badly to join them but at the same time obviously has no idea what to do.]
Come on, Pearl!

Thankfully they prefer it at the opposite end.]

[Hawke's life is really hard.]
no subject
Can she swim with those short legs?

He raises an eyebrow.]
She already looks like a drowned rat.
[he is immune to cute.]
no subject
[Excuse you!]
She's much cuter than a rat. Aren't you, Pearl?
[Hawke takes pity on her and steps forward to pick her up. He knows his dog, though, and he realizes what it was that finally motivated her to jump into the water. Look, she came to see you.
no subject
[it's so much more obvious now with the lack of fur. And he'd still argue she looks like a drowned rat, if a very happy one.
And he knows Hawke won't back down with this, so he reaches out to scratch her behind one ear.]
Is she really supposed to be this small? Are we feeding her enough?
no subject

I've never seen a dog this small before coming here. She'd be a snack to a mabari.
[... it's a good thing she doesn't understand him, isn't it? She still just looks happy because he's petting her.]
no subject
[What? He's not going to deny it, she's bite-sized!]
Although I think even a mabari would have trouble with all the hair.
no subject
She's a fur ball.
[it's funnier because he's had cats.]
no subject
...What's so funny?
no subject
You'll see once we have cats.
no subject
That sounds ominous.
no subject
At least cats don't pee on my clothes.
no subject
[Anders, you need to let go of that. :<]
no subject
[all pets have their flaws okay don't hold it against the cats.]

[HE'S CONFUSED ANDERS HE DOESN'T KNOW CATS come on be a bro here ;w;]
no subject
[quoting Varric here probably.]
no subject
[He won't pursue it, but that's not going to stop him from feeling confused! Or suddenly (even more) worried about taking on a litter of seven cats.]
